What is the Lunar New Year?

Lunar New Year is a major festival celebrated by billions of people, primarily in East and Southeast Asian cultures. While often called “Chinese New Year,” it is also celebrated in Vietnam, Seollal in Korea, and Losar in Tibet, among others.

It marks the beginning of a new year based on the lunisolar calendar. Because it follows the moon’s cycles, the date shifts every year between late January and mid-February.

It is fundamentally a “Spring Festival.” It celebrates the end of winter, the rebirth of nature, and the hope for a prosperous harvest.

The 15-Day Cycle: The celebration typically lasts 15 days, starting with the New Moon and ending with the Full Moon (the Lantern Festival).

This year (2026), Lunar New Year begins on February 17, ushering in the Year of the Fire Horse

Many families set up altars to “invite” ancestors to join the feast, offering food and incense. A way to honor family history and remember loved ones who have passed.

Traditions like fireworks and the color red were originally meant to scare away the demon Nian and evil spirits.

Many people visit temples for the atmosphere and tradition without strictly “practicing” the religion.

Spiritually, cleaning the house before the New Year isn’t just about hygiene; it’s about “sweeping away” the bad luck and negative energy of the previous year to make room for the new. In many Asian cultures, the most “sacred” part of the holiday isn’t a god, but the family unit. The spiritual obligation is to return home to show respect to parents and elders. Many people check their zodiac compatibility and “fortune” for the year, looking for spiritual alignment with the year’s animal (this year, the Horse) to navigate life’s challenges.

2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse, a combination that only occurs once every 60 years (the last was 1966). In the Chinese zodiac, both the Horse and the Fire element represent high energy, making this a “double fire” year that is famous for being incredibly intense, transformative, and fast-paced.

Here is what you can expect from the energy of this specific year

While the previous Year of the Wood Snake (2025) was about shedding old skin and quiet reflection, the Fire Horse is about explosive action. Breaking free. This year rewards those who take bold risks and follow their instincts. Things will likely move faster than expected. It is a year of “Mǎ dào chéng gōng”—an idiom meaning “instant success upon the arrival of the horse. The flip side of all that fire is impulsivity and burnout. It’s easy to start a dozen projects with passion but “run out of steam” before they are finished.

Fire represents the sun and light. Spiritually, this year is believed to bring “Resource Luck”—the tools, mentors, and clarity you need to see your path forward clearly. Astrologers note that 2026’s chart is “unbalanced” because it is heavy on Fire but lacks Water. Spiritually, water represents wealth and emotional calm. Without it, the year can feel “dry” or aggressive. Many practitioners suggest “introducing water” to your life—either literally (spending time near the ocean) or symbolically (wearing blue or black) to keep the “Fire Horse” from becoming a wildfire.

Tigers and Dogs are the Horse’s best friends in the zodiac. They will likely find 2026 empowering and full of leadership opportunities. Rats are the polar opposite of the Horse. If you are a Rat, 2026 might feel chaotic or like your plans are being constantly disrupted. The advice for Rats is to stay flexible and avoid big, risky investments. If you were born in a Horse year (e.g., 1990, 2002, 2014), this is your “zodiac birth year.” Paradoxically, this is traditionally considered a year of challenges. You are advised to “offend the God of Age” (Tai Sui) less by wearing red and staying humble. Brick Red (for energy), Emerald Green (for growth), and Blue (to balance the fire). Lucky Numbers: 3, 7, and 9.

To determine your specific outlook for 2026, the Year of the Fire Horse, look for your birth year in the table below.

Important Note: The Lunar New Year usually starts in late January or February. If you were born in January or early February, you might actually belong to the sign of the previous year.

Money may not flow as easily as expected. It’s a year for “Resource Luck” (learning and building) rather than “Windfall Luck” (sudden gambling wins) Tempers can flare. Because Horse and Fire are both impulsive, people may act before they think.
